On thin chalk soils, what is buried underneath affects what grows on top. Over a ditch the soil is deeper and the grass or crop stays green longer; over a wall or a road it is shallower and the growth parches first. The Frome meadows carry the remains of a managed irrigation system: carriers, drains, hatches and the ridged ground that let water be run across grass in a controlled sheet. Most of it is faint on the ground and obvious from above.

Capturing it is straightforward as long as the grass is short and the water is low, so late winter tends to be the right window. Where water is standing in the carriers it is recorded as water rather than modelled as ground, and the report says where.

Chalk downland is open, and the wind on a ridge here is nothing like the wind in the town below it. Rainfall is well under Devon levels, so the limiting factor is almost always the wind rather than the rain.

Practically that means checking conditions at height rather than at the vehicle and treating a gusty average as worse than a steady one. On a ridge site, an early start often catches the calmest part of the day.

The modern development on the edge of this town is unusual enough to be worth a mention: a distinct architectural approach, laid out on a fine-grained street pattern with materials that make it read differently from above than an ordinary estate.

Whatever the style, the survey questions are the ordinary ones: what the parcel looked like before, how the levels sit, where water goes, and what the difference is between one visit and the next. Those get answered the same way here as anywhere else.
