Aerial survey of land and sites around Weymouth
Aerial survey on the Dorset coast, stone quarrying ground and a shingle barrier that moves, with full Channel exposure and busy water beside it.
Stone ground south of the town
The peninsula south of the harbour is quarrying country, worked for building stone over centuries and still worked today. That produces the full range of extraction survey work: active faces and benches, stockpiles on hard standing, historic workings, spoil and the restored ground between them.
The routine is the one this site applies everywhere. The base surface is agreed before the first flight, the plan is written down so later visits match, the toes of piles are kept visible, and any figure heading into formal reporting needs control set on site by a land surveyor. What the report never does is present a number without saying what it was measured against.
A shingle barrier that will not sit still
The bank running west from here is one of the most studied coastal features in the country, and it moves: crest height, width and profile all change with storms and with the season.
One survey of a feature like that is a snapshot with limited value. A series flown to the same plan is a record of movement, which is what anybody managing or studying it actually needs. Clean shingle is also poor material for photogrammetry in flat light, because it offers little to match between frames, so low sun and oblique passes both improve the result.
Full Channel exposure
This front is wide open to the Channel and there is nothing to break the weather. Wind days outnumber usable days through the winter, and salt in the air puts a film on the glass faster than anywhere else on this list.
That is worked around rather than ignored: check the lens between flights, expect to move dates, and take a settled morning when it is offered rather than waiting for a more convenient one. Bookings here carry a fallback date as standard.
Busy water and busy ground
The harbour and the bay are working water with commercial and leisure traffic in and out, and the ground alongside is equally busy in season. Both matter to a flight: people who are not part of the job set how close the aircraft may work, and vessel movements need thinking about before, not during.
The answer is timing and coordination. Out of season and early in the day is easier ground to work, and where a site cannot be cleared the report says which parts were captured and which were not.
Low ground behind the front
Behind the seafront the ground is low and flat, with wetland, backwater and drainage that behave much like an estuary. Standing water reconstructs as a gap, reed and scrub read as their own canopy, and the useful outputs are extent, vegetation and change over time rather than levels through the water.
Where flood or drainage is the subject, that is a good thing rather than a limitation: the extent of water on a given date, recorded properly, is often the whole point of the survey.
Behind the survey
What Weymouth clients are actually buying
Registered operator
CAA registered, with an Operator ID and a Flyer ID held. Both are checkable, and any land agent or consultant is welcome to ask for them before a flight is booked.
A2 Certificate of Competency
The A2 CofC, which is what governs how close the aircraft may work to people who are not part of the job. No GVC is held, so operations are planned inside the A2 CofC.
Aircraft
A DJI Mavic 4 Pro carrying a 100 megapixel Hasselblad camera and 6K video, and a DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced with a 640 by 512 radiometric thermal camera.
Insurance
Insured with Coverdrone for commercial operations. A certificate goes to your office before the visit if your site induction needs one on file.
