Aerial survey of land and sites around Bridgwater

This is engineered ground. Fields on the Levels are divided by water rather than by hedge: rhynes, ditches and droves laid out over centuries, with pumping and sluices controlling what sits where. From ground level you see a field. From above you see the system.

That makes aerial capture unusually valuable here. The layout, the connections, where water is standing, which ditches are choked, where a bank has slumped and where a drove has broken up all appear in one set of frames, and they can be measured off rather than described.

Photogrammetry gets nothing from a water surface: it moves between frames and offers no fixed detail to match, so it reconstructs as noise or as a hole, and nothing below it reconstructs at all. On the Levels in winter that can be a very large proportion of the ground.

The report treats it as a boundary condition rather than a fault: the extent of standing water on the day is recorded, and no attempt is made to model a surface under it. For flood mapping that is the point. For ground levels, the answer is a dry spell and a different date.

Ground that is largely peat behaves in ways that reward measurement over time. It shrinks as it dries, settles under load, and moves in ways that are invisible between one visit and the next but obvious across several years.

So the useful pattern here is a datum survey followed by repeats on the same plan. Where the numbers are going into anything formal, control set by a land surveyor should be on the ground and referenced in every visit, and the report says whether it was.

There is nothing between the Bristol Channel and most of this ground, so wind arrives unbroken and the difference between conditions at ground level and at survey height can be considerable. On the open moors a still morning at the gate is not evidence of anything.

There are also installations on this coast with airspace restrictions around them, which are checked as part of planning rather than discovered on site. Where a parcel sits inside one, that is said in the quote along with what permission would be needed and who grants it.

Alongside the farmland this is a working industrial area with docks, logistics and major infrastructure activity, all of which generate the standard site jobs: material moving, surfaces to compare, laydown areas to record, access routes to capture before somebody else uses them.

The approach does not change. Agree what the volume is measured against, fix the plan once, keep the toes visible, and put the assumptions on the front page of the report rather than in a footnote.
